The program at the Mother’s Training Centre (MTC), adapted from the Little Woodford School program by Wing Commander KK Srinivasan, began on March 1, 2007, with five children. Over time, the number of participating mothers grew, and to date, more than 500 mothers and their children have been trained. These children are now continuing their education in various regular schools in and around Bangalore.
The Government of Karnataka has granted permission to expand the training program through orders No. MME/152/PHP/2021 dated 17.09.2021 and 88/PHP/2022 dated 04.06.2022. This initiative aims to support mothers of children with hearing impairments, specifically targeting those in the age group from zero to four years.
At MTC, mothers are taught to facilitate language acquisition by the Coordinator, counselors, and through mutual learning from each other. Additionally, parents are consoled, counselled, inspired, motivated, and guided in helping their children acquire age-appropriate speech, language, and comprehension skills. They gain skills in patience, teaching methods, and coping strategies, and learn about the stages and pace of learning. The curriculum is designed to integrate children into regular schools, with specific goals for both mothers and their children. The method is incorporated into the national guidelines as Standard Treatment Work Flows.
