Detailed Hearing Evaluation

Audiometry

It is a simple procedure and the gold standard test of hearing that assesses the lowest level of sound that one can hear. An audiometry testing is usually conducted in small, quiet and specially made sound treated rooms. It would majorly be in a two-room set up where the Audiologist will sit on one side and the patient will sit on the other. There will be a small window between the two rooms so that the Audiologist can note down your response to the sound being presented.

The sounds are presented using a headphone or an earplug connected to the audiometer. As the audiologist presents the sound, the patient upon hearing will respond either by raising the finger or pressing the response button. Testing will be done for each ear separately. the tones presented will be of different volumes and hence you will have to concentrate on the tone and respond to what you can hear.

Speech Audiometry is also a part of audiometry, which assesses your speech understanding ability. Instead of presenting tones, here, the Audiologist will speak to you through the mic and will also present to you certain words and phrases, which you may have to either answer or repeat according to the instructions given to you.

Immittance Test

Immittance test will measure the functionality of your eardrum and also look for any sign of infection in your ear. In this test, a soft earplug is used instead of a headphone. The tones are presented through the earplug along with the generation of pressure changes that will tell the Audiologist how good your eardrum moves in response to the sound and pressure being delivered. This test is key in determining the status of your middle ear.
