Dysphagia Clinic

The Dysphagia Unit stands as a fully equipped rehabilitation unit dedicated to addressing swallowing disorders comprehensively. Among the primary causes of Dysphagia are head and neck cancer, cerebral vascular accidents, traumatic brain injuries, and cerebral palsy. Our approach revolves around detailed evaluations conducted using standardised tools and evidence-based practices, providing the baseline  for therapeutic intervention catering to individual patient needs.

Within the unit, conventional therapy methods take centre stage, that include compensatory and facilitatory strategies, sensory exercises, as well as stretching and strengthening exercises. Each therapy session is documented, with follow-ups scheduled at regular intervals to monitor progress.

For patients grappling with head and neck cancer, pre- and post-counseling sessions play a pivotal role in fostering understanding and motivation throughout the treatment journey. Here, the emphasis lies on adopting compensatory strategies and heightened sensory awareness.

In cases linked to neurological origins, symptoms such as paralysis, sensory deficits, and cognitive impairments may manifest. Here, the therapeutic focus shifts towards oro-motor strengthening exercises, respiratory training, thermal stimulation, and swallowing manoeuvres, complemented by cognitive drills. For severe symptoms, Vital Stim training serves as an invaluable intervention.

Patients reliant on non-oral feeding methods like NG Tubes or PEG Tubes necessitate motivation and awareness regarding oral hygiene and the gradual reintroduction of oral intake. Caregivers are also equipped with training to ensure optimal hygiene and troubleshoot issues associated with non-oral feeding tubes.

Recognizing the profound impact of emotional and physical factors on therapy outcomes, our team adopts a positive and empathetic approach towards both patients and caregivers. This holistic approach not only fosters significant improvements in patients’ quality of life but also bolsters their overall well-being.

Furthermore, the Dysphagia Unit has a specialised paediatric team dedicated to enhancing feeding and swallowing functions in children with developmental disabilities and related conditions.

Our commitment to excellence extends beyond our unit’s confines through multidisciplinary collaborations with external neurologists, oncologists, and rehabilitation specialists. These partnerships facilitate comprehensive care and ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients.

Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, the Dysphagia Unit assures high-quality services across the spectrum of swallowing disorders, affirming our dedication to patient-centred care and continuous improvement.
