Communication Disorders

The interdisciplinary field of communication disorders provides exciting career opportunities for students. It has emerged as a career choice for students looking for a challenging and rewarding career as Audiologists and/or Speech Language Pathologists or Special Educator.

As part of its efforts to train professionals in this field, the Institute offers several courses ranging from short term courses, diploma to doctoral programs.

Diploma Course in Special Education

Diploma in Special Education [D. Ed Spl. Ed.(DHH)]

The Diploma course in Special Education provides training for students to become special teachers/educators of hearing impaired/deaf children, at integrated or special schools.

This course is recognized by Rehabilitation Council of India [RCI]. Examination for the course is conducted by Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi.

The course will enable pre-service teachers to acquire knowledge, develop competencies and practice skills to impart education to Deaf & Hard of Hearing children. The general objective of the course is to prepare special teachers at pre-primary (nursery, kindergarten etc.) and primary (I to IV – lower primary and V to VII – upper primary) levels to serve in special schools, integrated/inclusive setup and itinerant programmes.

Duration - 2 years (4 Semesters)

Intake - 25 seats (Reservation as per Government rules)

Admission Eligibility

  • Candidates must have passed 12th standard/PUC/Pre-Degree or any equivalent degree in any subject from any recognized state or central board.
  • Candidates should be above 17 years of age at the time of admission.

Mode of Selection

  • Candidates meeting the above eligibility should qualify the All India Online Aptitude Test conducted by Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). Selection is based on the qualification combined with results of interviews held by the Institute faculty.
  • Preference will be given to candidates already working in special schools/ NGO establishments and sponsored by employer.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with higher educational qualifications.

Undergraduate Degree Program

BACHELORS IN AUDIOLOGY & SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY (BASLP)

Students enrolled in this program are given intensive training in both theoretical and clinical aspects of speech, language and hearing (both normal and disordered). The aim of the program is to provide students with basic skills required to diagnose and treat patients with speech, language and hearing disabilities. The undergraduate program is affiliated to Bangalore University and is recognized by Rehabilitative Council of India (RCI).

Duration of Course - 6 semesters (3 years) with 2 semester compulsory internship (10 months).

Intake - 40 students per batch

Admission Eligibility

  • The candidate applying for admission to BSLPA course should have passed 10+2 examination or equivalent / two years of Pre-University/Pre-Degree examination conducted by the Pre University Board of Education of Government of respective State, and further,
  • The applicant/candidate should have studied: Physics, Chemistry & Biology / Mathematics / Computer Science / Statistics /Electronics / Psychology/ Home Science.
  • At the time of entry/admission to the first semester BSLPA course the candidate should be of age 17 years and there is no upper age limit for admission.
  • Lateral entry to 2nd year of BSLPA is permitted for candidates who meet the following criteria:
    • Successfully passed Diploma in Hearing-Language-Speech (DHLS) revised course from any RCI recognized training institute with Science background as specified under (2) above.
    • Two years of work experience in the field.
    • A maximum of 3 candidates may be admitted on merit basis as super numerary to total intake permitted by RCI and Bangalore University. For candidates who have successfully passed the pre-revised DHLS course recognized by RCI with 2 years of work experience, 3 month short course approved by RCI and entrance test will be the requirement.

Note: Minimum percentage of marks and age are subject to relaxation for special category students as per Bangalore University norms.

Eligibility criteria and syllabus is subject to revision as per Rehabilitation Council of India and Bangalore University norms from time to time.

The selection will be based on marks obtained by the candidates in their optional subjects.

Post-Graduate Degree Programs

The postgraduate programs in (i) Audiology (ii) Speech Language Pathology and (iii) combined Audiology & Speech Language Pathology aim at training students in advanced courses in speech, language and hearing sciences with specialization offered in either or both Audiology and Speech Language Pathology. As part of their post graduate training, students will be trained to carry out research which is one of the critical skills that a well trained clinician should have in order to provide most effective diagnostic and therapy services.

M. Sc (Aud) [AUDIOLOGY]

Intake - 10 seats (50% of seats are reserved for students of Bangalore University only).

M. Sc (SLP) [SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY]

Intake 15 seats (50% of seats are reserved for students of Bangalore University only).

MASLP [MASTER IN AUDIOLOGY AND SPEECH LANGAUGE PATHOLOGY] - A combined post-graduate program

Intake - 20 Seats (50% of seats are reserved for students of Bangalore University only).

INFORMATION COMMON TO ALL POST-GRADUATE PROGRAMS

The three post graduate courses – M.Sc (Aud), M.Sc (SLP) and MASLP programs are recognized by Rehabilitation Council of India and are affiliated to Bangalore University.

Duration: 4 semesters (2 years)

Admission Eligibility

  • Candidates must have passed B. Sc [Speech and Hearing] or Bachelors in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology [BSLPA] or B. Sc. [HLS] or any other degree in the area considered equivalent thereof, from any recognized Indian University or abroad.
  • Candidates who have passed undergraduate degree later than 2002-2003 and seeking admission should have successfully completed 1-year internship training program.
  • There is no upper age limit for admission to the course.
  • Admission shall be made on the basis of Bangalore university norms

Mode of Selection

The selection will be based on merit i.e., marks obtained by the candidates in their optional subjects, combined with results of personal interview conducted by the Institute faculty.

Bachelor of Special Education (Hearing Impairment)

The bachelor Degree Course in Special Education provides training for students to become special educators/ teachers of Hearing Impaired Children, at Integrated / Inclusive/ Special School.

This course recognized by Rehabilitation Council of India [RCI] & Bangalore University.

The course will enable pre-service teachers to acquire knowledge, development competencies and practice skills to impart education to Hearing Impaired Children. The general objectives of the course are to prepare special teachers at secondary stage to serve in special schools, integrated/ Inclusive setup and Itinerant programmes.

Sign Language Courses

Basic Courses in Sign Language Level I

The objective of this course is to provide the individual with the basic skills necessary to communicate with the deaf. This course consists of 30 hours which can be conducted as:

  • 10 hours/day for 3 days
  • 5 hours/day for 6 days
  • 3 hours/day for 2 weeks

Basic Course in Sign Language- Level II

The objective is to make the individual fluent in signing and train him/her to provide basic interpretation services for the deaf. This course is conducted for

  • 3 hours every Saturday for 6 months

Note: There is no age bar and no educational qualification is required for these two basic courses. Short-term courses are conducted on a regular basis for the benefit of individual candidates or Institutes.

Diploma Course in Interpretation

The objective is to train the individual to become a professional interpreter for the deaf. The course is recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). The 1-year diploma course consists of three levels. Each level is a certificate course consisting of 90 hours (3 months). Classes are conducted everyday starting from July of the current year up to April in the next year.

  • Level A: Basic Sign Language course (3 months)
  • Level B: Semi professional interpreting (3 months)
  • Level C: Professional Interpreting (3 months)

Eligibility: Graduates of any discipline. Candidates who have deaf parents, deaf siblings or have been exposed to Sign Language will be given preference.

Mother's Training Program

  • The objective of this program is to train the mothers of young children with hearing impairment in learning to communicate with their children. The program primarily focuses on enabling mothers to carry out incident oriented lesson to develop cognitive skills including attention, memory and reasoning abilities, language, speech and literacy skills. Mothers are trained to handle children with different degrees of hearing loss.
  • Mothers provide training to their children in their mother tongue. Mothers who successfully complete three years training along with their children are awarded a certificate from the Institute.
