Diploma Course in Special Education

D.Ed Special Education (Hearing Impairment)

The Diploma course in Special Education provides training for students to become special teachers/educators of hearing impaired/deaf children, at integrated or special schools.

This course is recognized by Rehabilitation Council of India [RCI]. Examination for the course is conducted by Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi.

The course will enable pre-service teachers to acquire knowledge, develop competencies and practice skills to impart education to Deaf & Hard of Hearing children. The general objective of the course is to prepare special teachers at pre-primary (nursery, kindergarten etc.) and primary (I to IV – lower primary and V to VII – upper primary) levels to serve in special schools, integrated/inclusive setup and itinerant programmes.

Duration - 2 years (4 Semesters)

Intake - 25 seats (Reservation as per Government rules)

Admission Eligibility:

  • Candidates must have passed 12th standard/PUC/Pre-Degree or equivalent with 50% marks in any stream from any recognized state or central board.
  • Candidates should be above 17 years of age at the time of admission.

Mode of Selection:

  • Candidates meeting the above eligibility should qualify the All India Online Aptitude Test conducted by Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). Selection is based on the qualification combined with results of interviews held by the Institute faculty.
  • Preference will be given to candidates already working in special schools/ NGO establishments and sponsored by employer.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with higher educational qualifications.

Undergraduate Degree Program

BACHELORS IN AUDIOLOGY & SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY (BASLP)

Students enrolled in this program are given intensive training in both theoretical and clinical aspects of speech, language and hearing (both normal and disordered). The aim of the program is to provide students with basic skills required to diagnose and treat patients with speech, language and hearing disabilities. The undergraduate program is affiliated to Bangalore University and is recognized by Rehabilitative Council of India (RCI).

Duration of Course - 6 semesters (3 years) with 2 semester compulsory internship (10 months).

Intake - 40 students per batch

Admission Eligibility:

  • The candidate applying for admission to BSLPA course should have passed 10+2 examination or equivalent / two years of Pre-University/Pre-Degree examination conducted by the Pre University Board of Education of Government of respective State, and further,
  • The applicant/candidate should have studied: Physics, Chemistry & Biology / Mathematics / Computer Science / Statistics /Electronics / Psychology/ Home Science.
  • At the time of entry/admission to the first semester BSLPA course the candidate should be of age 17 years and there is no upper age limit for admission.
  • Lateral entry to 2nd year of BSLPA is permitted for candidates who meet the following criteria:
    • Successfully passed Diploma in Hearing-Language-Speech (DHLS) revised course from any RCI recognized training institute with Science background as specified under (2) above.
    • Two years of work experience in the field.
    • A maximum of 3 candidates may be admitted on merit basis as super numerary to total intake permitted by RCI and Bangalore University. For candidates who have successfully passed the pre-revised DHLS course recognized by RCI with 2 years of work experience, 3 month short course approved by RCI and entrance test will be the requirement.

Note: Minimum percentage of marks and age are subject to relaxation for special category students as per Bangalore University norms.

Eligibility criteria and syllabus is subject to revision as per Rehabilitation Council of India and Bangalore University norms from time to time.

The selection will be based on marks obtained by the candidates in their optional subjects.

Post-Graduate Degree Programs

The postgraduate programs in (i) Audiology (ii) Speech Language Pathology and (iii) combined Audiology & Speech Language Pathology aim at training students in advanced courses in speech, language and hearing sciences with specialization offered in either or both Audiology and Speech Language Pathology. As part of their post graduate training, students will be trained to carry out research which is one of the critical skills that a well trained clinician should have in order to provide most effective diagnostic and therapy services.

M. Sc (Aud) [AUDIOLOGY]::

Intake - 10 seats (50% of seats for students of Management & 50% of seats for students of Bangalore University ).

M. Sc (SLP) [SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY]::

Intake 10 seats (50% of seats for students of Management & 50% of seats for students of Bangalore University ).

MASLP [MASTER IN AUDIOLOGY AND SPEECH LANGAUGE PATHOLOGY] - A combined post-graduate program:

Intake - 20 Seats (50% of seats for students of Management & 50% of seats for students of Bangalore University ).

INFORMATION COMMON TO ALL POST-GRADUATE PROGRAMS

The three post graduate courses – M.Sc (Aud), M.Sc (SLP) and MASLP programs are recognized by Rehabilitation Council of India and are affiliated to Bangalore University.

Duration: 4 semesters (2 years)

Admission Eligibility:

  • Candidates must have passed B. Sc [Speech and Hearing] or Bachelors in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology [BSLPA] or B. Sc. [HLS] or any other degree in the area considered equivalent thereof, from any recognized Indian University or abroad.
  • Candidates who have passed undergraduate degree later than 2002-2003 and seeking admission should have successfully completed 1-year internship training program.
  • There is no upper age limit for admission to the course.
  • Admission shall be made on the basis of Bangalore university norms

Mode of Selection:

The selection will be based on merit i.e., marks obtained by the candidates in their optional subjects, combined with results of personal interview conducted by the Institute faculty.

Bachelor of Special Education (Hearing Impairment)

Rules and Regulations for Inmates of the Hostel

ADMISSION CHARGES:-

Every student before getting a seat in the Hostel should have paid admission charges as follows:-

  • (1) Rs.1250.00 per month rent paid for whole year as Rs.15,000/-
  • (2) Rs.10,000/- as caution deposit which will be refunded at the time of leaving the hostel.

HOSTEL REPRESENTATIVE:

Among the incumbents of the hostel a Hostel Secretary and an Assistant Secretary will be elected. The Secretary and Assistant Secretary are responsible for ensuring cleanliness in the Hostel premises; quality and quantity of the food served to inmates, and will report to the Resident Warden/ Warden. In the event of nobody being elected as Secretary and Assistant Secretary, as a last resort Hostel Wardens can nominate one among the hostellers as Secretary and Assistant Secretary.

CLEANLINESS & DISCIPLINE:-

  • Inmates of the Hostel will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of their respective rooms and surroundings. General sweeping and cleaning of the toilet will be done by the staff employed for this purpose by the Institute. However, it will be the responsibility of all hostel inmates to see that the hostel premises are maintained hygienically clean. In this connection, instructions issued by the Warden shall be followed scrupulously.
  • All inmates of the Hostel are required to be inside the campus before 08:30 p.m. on all days and inside the hostel before 9.00 pm.. If any of the inmates wants to stay out or has to be with their local guardian or their parents, parents have to call the hostel warden for permission for their ward and have to have the prior permission of the Hostel Wardens. Over stay, except where unavoidable due to strike, will be viewed seriously.
  • Silence shall be maintained in the hostel after 09:30 p.m. The T.V., tape recorders, transistors etc will not be kept after 9.30 pm. Hostilities are not permitted to sit and chat inside the rooms/on the corridor or talk over the phone after 9.30 p.m.
  • Consumption of alcoholic beverages, intoxicants/drugs in the hostel premises is strictly prohibited.
  • Hot water from the solar heating systems /Geyser will be available only in the evenings.

VISITORS VISITS BY HOSTEL INMATES:

Every student before getting a seat in the Hostel should have paid admission charges as follows:-

  • All the inmates of the hostel will submit the names and addresses with telephone number of the local guardian and other relatives/friends, if any [up to a maximum of two] with whom they may spend an occasional weekends. This information countersigned by the parents should be handed over/posted to the warden/Resident warden within 15 days of joining the hostel.
  • Any temporary vacation/overnight stay of the hostel inmate or travel outside Bangalore will require prior permission of the Hostel Warden in the prescribed format. Under no circumstances will any male/female friends relatives of the inmates of ladies/Gents hostel enter/stay in the hostel.
  • No visitor shall stay overnight in the hostel premises or enter the hostel rooms without the prior permission of the Hostel Warden/Resident Warden.
  • All casual visitors who visit to meet the inmates of the hostel will meet the hostellers at Visitors in the premises of canteen.

ILLNESS/EMERGENCY:

In case of medical emergencies, Hostel Warden should be informed immediately for necessary action. In case of emergency during the night, the Resident Warden who stays in the ground floor of the girls' hostel should be contacted and if found necessary the hosteller can be taken to doctor with the help of the security staff. Inmates should inform the Warden /Res. Warden regarding any chronic illness for which medication etc is required. All the inmates of the Hostel are required to submit their medical history to the Warden.

SECURITY:

Security is provided within the Hostel campus day and night, through security staff. Any complaint regarding security arrangements should be brought to the notice of the staff. Inmates are directed not to keep valuables like jewels, costly gadgets, watches or cash near the windows in the hostel rooms. Inmates are directed to keep such valuables in the table lockers provided. They are responsible for their belongings.

EVERY INMATE OF THE HOSTEL SHALL

HOSTEL REGISTERS:

The following registers shall be maintained in the Hostel by the Hostel Warden

  • Maintain the dignity , decorum and discipline of the Hostel
  • Observe the notified timings of the Hostel.
  • Maintain the Hostel premises and his/her room neat, clean and tidy.
  • Report without delay any ragging incident to the Director, Principal, Warden or Resident Warden.
  • Meet his/her friends and relatives during the notified visiting hours.
  • Obtain prior written permission from the Warden for staying away from the Hostel on any night
  • Mark attendance in the evenings regularly after 9.00 pm.
  • Participate in every activity of the Hostel.
  • If any repairs are to be carried out/ if any accessories are to be loaded to the Computer Systems in the study rooms, they should be brought down to the Institute and attended to. No mechanic or any other person should be entertained or taken to rooms.

EVERY INMATE OF THE HOSTEL SHALL NOT

HOSTEL REGISTERS:

The following registers shall be maintained in the Hostel by the Hostel Warden

  • Disturb the other inmates during study hours.
  • Take part in politics and in any kind of strikes.
  • Take friends and relatives into his/her room.
  • Rag or boss over any other inmates of the Hostel.
  • Change the allotted room or cot or table for him.
  • Tip the Attender/servant to engage for his personal work.
  • Hang photos and pictorial calendars on the walls of the room.

Any matter that is not covered by the above regulations may be brought before the Warden through Hostel Representative for further necessary guidelines. The decision of the Director in consultation with the Hostel Warden will be final in all matters pertaining to the Hostel.

Absence of any notified activity of the Hostel is punishable. For violation of any of the above regulations, action will be taken as follows:-

  • One oral warning will be issued to the concerned individual.
  • If any inmate is found to violate any rule a second time the matter will be brought to the notice of the Director and Principal, and a written warning will be issued with a copy to the parent/guardian and explanation sought.
  • Further action will be at the discretion of the Director, in consultation with the Principal and Wardens.
